The Henhayes Centre opened in 2008 having replaced the old Crewkerne Day Centre which had been running since 1975. The new centre is no longer a day centre and instead offers a range of fun groups and activities for not only the elderly but for those of all ages!
Whilst we do still provide a few of the services delivered by the old Day Centre, we have recognised the change in attitude towards older age, the better health of older people, their ability to remain mobile and retain independence for longer, as well as the needs of the whole community.
This means we now offer a broader scope of services & activities, our café area is open to the public each week day for food and refreshments, and the Centre is used by a variety of outside groups of all ages.
In April 2026 ITV News visited The Henhayes Centre to report and showcase some of the activities and services on offer, please see the news feature using the link below.
As a charity we aim to reduce isolation, loneliness, and seclusion for the older and disabled members of our local community, while promoting their health & well-being. We do this by offering a number of core activities which include fantastic meals, support, friendship, companionship, activities to improve fitness as well as mental and cognitive health, and the opportunity to develop positive social connections.
By providing a safe and welcoming facility, where you can feel included, cared for and appreciated, we strive to enhance quality of life, provide fun-filled activities, and ensure that instead of being isolating and lonely, ageing can be enjoyable and entertaining.
What we do here at the Henhayes Centre is vital to so many people, be it for the benefits of exercise, for the social interactions and the friendships made, or even the respite provided to loved ones or carers.
The Henhayes Centre is not a council run facility and is a charity privately run by a board of trustees and 5 members of staff. To enable us to offer our core activities at very reduced and affordable rates we rely heavily on our amazing volunteers, grants & fundraising, as well as hiring out the Centre when not in use by us.
As a result, we hire the Centre to a number of community groups such as short mat bowls, baby & toddler sessions, sports, yoga & dance groups, band practices, local community groups such as Crewkerne time Bank & Somerset Carers, the local U3A, and Age UK.
The Centre is also the perfect venue for private hire for events such as parties or wedding receptions, wakes or celebrations of life, Christenings, concerts, or shows.
